About Arena

Arena was started in 1973 by Horst Dassler, son of Adidas founder Adolf Dassler, with the aim of manufacturing competitive swimwear. The inspiration came after swimmer Mark Spitz's impressive performance at the 1972 Olympics, where he won seven gold medals. Arena's first product was the 'Skinfit', a lightweight swimsuit that weighed just 18 grams. In 1974, Arena made its first sponsorship deal with Australian swimmer Shane Gould, launching a swimwear collection bearing his name. Soon, Arena began sponsoring many top athletes, including Mark Spitz, Novella Calligaris and Steve Furniss, for the 1976 Olympics. In the 1980s, Arena introduced the "Flyback" swimsuit with thin straps for better shoulder movement. Later, it launched the 'AquaRacer' (1990) and 'X-Flat' (1997) swimsuits, continuing the tradition of innovation. The company enhanced its reputation by signing athletes such as Alexander Popov and Franziska van Almsick. In 2019, Arena acquired the global rights to Italian swimwear brand Diana, expanding its reach.
